Historic Rock Island Swing Bridge Project to Continue After Fire
On Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 an accidental fire started on the Rock Island Swing Bridge in Inver Grove Heights during construction activity. Fortunately, no construction workers, emergency personnel or bystanders were injured. There is a builder’s risk insurance policy in place and over the next couple weeks a series of inspections and tests will be conducted to determine the extent of the damage and what needs to be done to move this project forward.
The City of Inver Grove Heights is fully committed to seeing this project through to completion and will do so while ensuring the safety of the workers involved as well as the public’s safety. There was no damage incurred to the two new bridge spans. Work on the bridge will continue to keep construction moving forward.
The opening of the bridge will most likely be delayed depending on the assessment of the damage. The City of Inver Grove Heights is anticipating the 670’ foot bridge to be completed and looks forward to providing the public with this safe and enjoyable recreational asset.
